FAQ
The short answers. Nothing here is legal advice.
Is this legal?
Remakecraft follows the clean-room method: one side describes what a program does, and a separate side that never saw the original builds from that description. The original's code is never read. Knowledge of it comes only from your own screenshots and recordings of a lawfully licensed copy, its public documentation and public file-format specifications.
A documented clean-room process is evidence of independent creation, not a legal guarantee. Whether a wall between agent contexts counts the way a wall between human teams does has not been tested in court. This is not legal advice; if it matters, ask a lawyer where you live.
What doesn't it protect me from?
Trademark, trade dress, design-right and patent claims, and any licence agreement you accepted. Pick your own name, icons and colours for every clone, and copy behaviour, not looks. Brushling, for example, has its own name, icons and colours and contains none of the original's code, icons, fonts, images or help text.
Does the wall work outside Claude Code?
No. Agents without hooks get instructions only. In Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, Copilot, OpenCode and other Agent Skills hosts, the same rules ship in AGENTS.md and nothing enforces them. The pipeline runs, but the wall is the honour system.
Hasn't the model already read the original?
For a closed-source app, its code was never public. Open-source remakes of popular apps almost certainly are in the training data, though. The blocklist keeps them out of every agent's tools; it can't remove them from the weights.
What can I point it at?
Desktop and web apps, in v1. Not DRM, anti-cheat or security software. The rewrite is built in rust-egui, tauri or web.
What does a run cost?
It depends on the app. The pilot builds 10 features first, measures tokens and time, and extrapolates the full run before you approve it. --cheap runs everything on Sonnet with one builder. Brushling took {{BRUSHLING_AGENT_HOURS}} agent-hours and ${{BRUSHLING_COST_USD}} in tokens.
Can the score be gamed?
Builders can't edit the tests or the spec, their hashes are checked on every merge, a stub scan runs, and about 30% of the tests are sealed where builders can't see them. Parity still only measures what the spec says, so read the published spec next to the number. How parity is scored
What happens if a run stops halfway?
Runs resume from progress files and git checkpoints after a crash or a usage-limit stop.
Is Remakecraft affiliated with Microsoft?
No. Remakecraft and Brushling are independent open-source projects, not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by Microsoft Corporation or any other maker of software Remakecraft is pointed at. Microsoft, Windows and Microsoft Paint are trademarks of the Microsoft group of companies, mentioned only to describe what Brushling behaves like.
I found a way through the wall.
Please report it privately through GitHub's private reporting form, not a public issue. A bypass is treated like a vulnerability. What counts
What licence do clones get?
The one you pick at setup, MIT by default. Remakecraft itself is MIT.
